The 21-year-old will be assessed by medical staff ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday before a decision is made about whether he is fit enough to feature.

Anthony Martial, who was left on the bench at St Mary’s, is set to play from the start.

Jose Mourinho’s decision to omit the France international from his team was a surprise given his good form, but sources have told ESPN FC that United are carefully managing the 22-year-old’s workload while he nurses a muscle problem.

Martial, who has scored six goals in his last six league starts, was restricted to just 13 minutes against Southampton after replacing Rashford but should be fit enough to start against Arsenal.

Mourinho is hoping either Smalling or Bailly can recover in time to start. Marcos Rojo, who was on the bench at St. Mary’s, is another option to partner Phil Jones at the back, although the Argentina international has not played a single minute of football this season.
