D.C. United are having “productive discussions” with injured midfielder and designated player Paul Arriola about a contract extension, the Washington Post reported on Saturday.
Per the report, the team is prepared to provide a raise while adding at least two years to Arriola’s contract, which runs through 2021 and paid him $700,000 in 2019. The Post quoted a person close to the situation saying: “Paul wants to stay in D.C. It should work out.”

Arriola, 25, tore his ACL in a preseason game on Feb. 15, and he was expected to miss the entire 2020 season before it was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Since joining D.C. in 2017 from Liga MX’s Club Tijuana, Arriola has 14 goals and 12 assists in 68 games (64 starts). That includes six goals and two assists in 29 games (28 starts) in 2019.
Arriola, a Chula Vista, Calif., native, also has five goals and four assists in 33 career appearances for the United States.
