Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has said the fight against the coronavirus is more important than the restart of the Premier League.

The Premier League has been suspended unto April 30 at the earliest due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“My biggest wish right now is that today’s new infection numbers are again lower than yesterday’s. But not that Premier League immediately resumes,” the Germany international told Kicker.

“Football has no priority right now. It’s only about slowing down the spreading of the virus.”

Leagues all over the world have been halted amid the coronavirus crisis and it looks increasingly unlikely that football will return in the coming weeks.

In Italy, the European country hit hardest by the coronavirus, calls to cancel the Serie A season have emerged.

“We will see where we are with the number of infections by mid- or late April. And then we’ll have a better position to make a decision. And it won’t be possible to make a decision which satisfies all sides,” Rudiger added.

“If it’s about the health of each and every one we will understand it and comply with it.”
